The inaugural Taiwan EMBA "Black Tide Route" Regatta in 2022, featuring participation from eight universities and sixty entrepreneurs, fearlessly kicked off in the face of wind and rain. The flag-bestowing and horn-blowing ceremony took place at Anping Port in Tainan, officially marking the commencement of the largest university sailing race in the history of Taiwan.
To boost the promotion of sailing sports, the Republic of China Masters Sports Association collaborated with EMBA sailing clubs from seven universities. Together, they successfully organized the first national EMBA "Black Tide Route" Sailing Invitational and the "Blue Economy: Seminar on Maritime Sports Leisure and Economic Development." Through brainstorming, conceptual inspiration, on-site practice, and hands-on sailing activities, participants engaged in sailing sports.
Eight schools, represented by seven large sailyachts, including National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University, National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University, National Taipei University of Technology, National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, as well as a joint team from Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan Sport University, took part in the flag-bestowing and horn-blowing ceremony. Deans of various schools, EMBA executives, and important mentors were present to award team flags to the historically significant sailing teams representing their institutions.
The inaugural Taiwan EMBA Sailing Regatta set sail from Anping Port on the 15th, heading towards Kaohsiung's Xiziwan as the destination for the long-distance race. On the 16th, two round-the-buoy races were held in the waters off Kaohsiung. The overall rankings were determined based on the results of three races. National Taipei University of Technology secured third place in the long-distance race and first place in both round-the-buoy races, claiming the overall championship. The joint team from Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan Sport University won first place in the long-distance race, secured third place in the first round, and second place in the second round, earning them the runner-up position. Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University's sailing team, as the seeded team, achieved third place overall.
Responsible for organizing the event, Chairman of the Sailing Committee of the Republic of China Masters Sports Association and Chairman of Warhawk Sailing, Peng Xian-en, expressed that mainland China has successfully organized the "Desert Challenge" by leveraging its unique geographical environment. This event attracted over three thousand participants, including Taiwan EMBA students, to experience the charm of the desert and created a substantial economic value for the competition. Given that Taiwan is surrounded by the sea, located along the Kuroshio Current, and the government emphasizes a maritime-friendly approach, there should be a focus on developing a distinctive Taiwanese maritime sports culture. Peng also designed the "Black Tide Route Sailing King Ace" medal, which is awarded to participating sailors, showcasing his determination to make this event a driving force for Taiwan's sports industry.
Chief Judge Guo Ting-xiang expressed that, having served as a judge for many years, it is rare to witness a scenario where all yachts successfully complete the second round of a round-the-buoy race without any Did Not Finish (DNF). This indicates that the participating sailors have a profound understanding of their yachts, demonstrating their ability to balance safety and harmony while completing the race.
The awards ceremony of the Taiwan EMBA Sailing Regatta is not only a recognition and celebration of glory but also, through the creation of various awards, has stirred up waves of excitement, illuminating future business opportunities in the sailing industry. Peng Xian-en, while showcasing creativity, designed four major awards - "Pioneer," "Sincerity," "Fearless," and "Elegance" - each crafted with unique ingenuity, serving as catalysts to boost morale.
The NTU EMBA Sailing Team has purchased six sailyachts in the last two years, not only invigorating the Taiwanese sailyacht market but also nurturing the highest number of yacht owners and clubs, earning them the "Pioneer Award." Captain Zhang Jun-hao of the NTU Sailing Team, who is also the Chairman of Kin Cheng Construction, mentioned that the yacht named "Kin Cheng No.1," participating in this race, is the sixth large sailyacht purchased by him and Chairman Zhou Cai-xin of Chikang Food.
The STUST EMBA Sailing Team only decided to participate in the competition in August of this year, forming a team in just two months. They even completed ASA International Sailing Yacht Certification training without any complications. Captain Tsai Yu-min, known as "Aunt Tsai Renting," deserves credit for her commendable efforts, and the entire team rightly received the "Sincerity Award."
The NCCU EMBA Sailing Team ranked second in the long-distance race, but in the first round of the round-the-buoy race, their yacht got entangled in fishing nets. Coupled with unfavorable wind conditions and counter-currents, they couldn't get in position on time, resulting in a Did Not Finish (DNF) penalty. However, in the second round, they secured a third-place finish, leading to an overall ranking of fourth. This showcased their determined spirit of persevering despite knowing the challenges, earning them the "Elegance Award." Captain Huang Li-hua mentioned that during the second round of the round-the-buoy race, they had to change spinnakers twice, using a total of three spinnakers. Without rigorous training, such maneuvers would be impossible, making the award a significant affirmation for the entire crew.
The NCKU EMBA Alumni Association Sailing Club received the "Fearless Award." Peng Xian-en stated that their team, "Hongyang," possesses top-notch qualifications, capabilities, and the ability to navigate across oceans and conquer large waves, making them the most formidable team to challenge Dongsha Islands in the second edition of the competition next year.
Several notable individuals attended the awards ceremony, including Lai Chun-hsiung, former Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at National Cheng Kung University and a member of the NCKU Alumni Association Sailing Club; Wang Shui-wen, former Director-General of the Sports Administration; Peng Tai-lin, Chairman of the Republic of China Masters Sports Association; and Cheng Bao-lian, Vice Chairman of Asia Yacht Investment Ltd., a key figure in the Taiwan yacht market. Former Sports Administration Director Gao Jun-xiong also participated as a member of the runner-up team representing Taiwan Normal University and National Taiwan Sport University, demonstrating his passion for sailing sports.
